Storage tips for your special memories on video tape
You need to take care of your magnetic tapes, they won’t last forever.
On average, tapes degrade 10-20% over 10 to 25 years.
Here are a few tips to be aware of.
- Treat your cassettes with care. Always rewind them, don’t leave your cassettes paused as this can stretch the tape.
- Store them in a dry, cool place. If you leave your cassettes near heat from a stove or constant sunlight, they may degrade.
- Try to avoid placing your tapes near anything magnetic that might potentially destroy your tapes.
If you do want to get tapes digitised at some point it would be a shame if the content had gone bad due to humidity or something like that.
